i was in the 7th grade. my parents, nate, b, and dru all lived under the same roof and i was about as awkward as they come. it was also the beginning of the AIM era and all that came with america online. there is not much i miss about those days with the exception of the anticipation. there was just something glorious about waiting 5 minutes for the dial-up internet to connect and hearing "you've got mail" blare because the volume was turned up too loud from my brother's listening to winamp.
it was fun. it was similar to running out to the mailbox, you never quite knew what is going to be in it, but there was always a chance there would be something fun. you know like a highlights magazine.
but now i sit on my bed with my blackberry next to me blinking each time one of my three email accounts gets an email or someone writes on my facebook wall or a new person tweeted. the anticipation has been replaced with immediate gratification which is both a joy and a curse.
i'm always available and always able to communicate in various forms, but i very rarely have to wait for much which in turn has caused frustration in other areas of my life.
where will i work?
which new house or apartment will i move to?
who will i marry?
and on and on and on and on.
the blackberry doesn't blink with those answers.
i'm not very good at waiting. ask anyone who knows me, but there was a day, at least one in 1997, when waiting was fun. anticipation was worth it even if it was just for three words: "you've got mail"
maybe i'll think back to when i was better at waiting and anticipate the words...
"you have the job"
"will you marry me?"
"you've won a millionaire dollars" (only kidding)
and while i wait with great expectations for what is ahead i'll trust the Author of it all.
