scars

we all have them. some are from stories of clumsiness. others are from wounds either emotional or physical. some are from injuries or surgeries.

i have one on my neck that is far more noticeable to me than it is to anyone else. yes, i realize i just confessed how i'm a little vain. there isn't a morning that goes by that i don't look at it and wish that it weren't there, or at least that it wasn't so big. but some days i think about what it represents...healing, and it seems much more worth it.

this brings me to my current question. do scars speak more of healing or of a wound? maybe it doesn't matter, but maybe it does. maybe i'll never fully know and that's okay too.

if you haven't seen slumdog millionaire, you should go right now. it's worth it.
it won't ruin any part of the movie for me to tell you that one of the main characters, latika has a scar on her face. you see in the movie when she gets the wound and then you see years later the scar. it's a beautiful part of the movie when they focus on it for a few seconds...it's a small picture of redemption. and i love when things get redeemed.

if i'm honest, one part of the resurrection story that i struggle with is that Jesus returned with scars in His hands. these scars in His hands spoke of the wounds He suffered for me. in my selfishness I wish that God could have redeemed even the scars, because it seems a little nicer, more fairy tale like. but He didn't because He knew Thomas would need to see them to believe and maybe we need them too. sometimes the wound is healed with a scar and that scar becomes a reminder.

a reminder that He makes all things new...
a reminder that we've been wounded, but because of His wounds we have been healed.
and a reminder that no wound is too great for Him.

today, i'll be thankful for my scar. it speaks of a physical healing that i prayed for. without the scar, it might be much easier to forget the journey to that point.

all of these thoughts about scars, wounds, and redemption is a work in progress. probably will continue to be one forever.

i'm okay with that.

Lord, make something beautiful out of our wounds...
