learning friendship.

"there are a few people out there with whom you fit just so, and amazingly, you keep fitting just so even after you have growth spurts or lose weight or stop wearing high heels. you keep fitting after you have children or change religions or stop dyeing your hair or quit your job at goldman sachs and take up farming. somehow, God is gracious enough to give us a few of those people, people you can stretch into, people who don't go away, and whom you wouldn't want to go away, even if they offered it." -winner

this week i have learned a lot about friendships. in some precious ways and in some ways that i wish i could have learned differently. but that's the beautiful thing about doing life with people: it can be a beautiful mess. because we're messy. we hurt each other. we serve each other. we aren't honest. we bare our souls. we aren't trustworthy. we are secret keepers. we laugh. we cry. we get mad. we make the awkward phone call. we bring the food when it is needed. it's all these things that make us who we are and in turn make up friendship. sometimes it doesn't turn out the way you think it will and other times there is an immense gratitude for the unexpected blessings of sharing our lives with people.

i know that friendship is one of my favorite things and that i'm still learning how to be a friend. Lord willingly i will continue to learn for the next 80 years. until then, i'll learn in grace and learn in love knowing that friends are the best thing.
