today is mallory's birthday.
she is my best friend from college and one of the dearest people i've ever known.
our friendship is filled with adventure, honesty, tough conversations, depth, laughter, tears, accountability, fun, and mixed cds. when i think of mallory, my heart is filled with a deep gratitude for a sister who gets me. she will speak into my life in a way that i hear, accept, and become grateful for. mallory doesn't shy away from difficult conversations and she's always up for ice cream so sometimes the two go hand and hand.
mallory has taught me a lot about friendship. sometimes it's easy. sometimes it's long suffering. but always, ALWAYS, it is meant to reflect the gospel. and she does.
"there is nothing small or inconsequential about our stories. and when we tell the truth about our lives--the broken parts, the secret parts, the beautiful parts--then the gospel comes to life, an actual story about redemption, instead of abstraction and theory and things you learn in sunday school" (niequist, p.240).
on her birthday, i wish her nothing but the best in this year ahead. and i'm more grateful than ever for her willingness to share her life with me. the broken, the secret, and the beautiful because it reminds me of the gospel and how i don't have to live in this world alone. and that is something i could never thank her enough for. i am better because mallory is my friend. today we celebrate her.
happy, happy birthday mal. be on the lookout for another stellar mixed cd coming your way.
love you, mean it.
