i drove home to fort smith for mother's day today. dru hill is leaving for kamp this week and mother's day is a holiday that deserves to be celebrated so the trip home seemed appropriate. my mom is a pretty legit lady, if you have the opportunity to get to know her, you should.
fort smith always offer a bit of nostalgia. nothing is the same and strangely everything is the same. it's this weird paradox. i haven't technically lived here in 6 years, but sometimes it seems just like yesterday. donald miller said, "it's interesting how you sometimes have to leave home before you can ask difficult questions, how the questions never come up in the room you grew up in, in the town in which you were born. it's funny how you can't ask difficult questions in a familiar place, how you have to stand back a few feet and see things in a new way before you realize..."
realize what?
...that your brothers really are the greatest people in the world.
...that your parents know more than you have ever given them credit for.
...that it is a great gift to remember the stories of growing up in the same house your parents still live in & tell those stories until you don't think you can physically laugh anymore.
...that holidays should be way more often than they are because there truly is so much to celebrate
...that home will never be the same yet it will always be home.
i wouldn't want to live in fort smith anymore, but i'm thankful it is home. the familiarity is safe and though safe is not my goal in life it's great every once in a while.
happy mother's day to you moms out there. thank you for your unconditional love and for dedicating your life to crazy kids like myself. you deserve more than a day.
gotta run, chocolate chip cookies are in the oven...
i guess i'll cheat again on my low carb diet ;)
